Cost of a Concrete Patio in Houston: Standard, Stamped, and Stained

Three patio finishes, three price ranges, three different reasons to choose each.

Cost of a Concrete Patio in Houston: Standard, Stamped, and Stained

If you are pricing a concrete patio in Greater Houston, here are the three finish tiers, their typical installed costs in 2026, and what you actually get for the price difference.

Quick numbers

Standard broom-finish patio: $7-12 per sq ft. Decorative stamped or stained patio: $12-22 per sq ft. Premium custom patio (multi-color stamped, integrated features): $18-30 per sq ft. A typical 300 sq ft Houston patio falls in the $2,100-$6,600 range depending on finish.

Tier 1: Standard concrete patio — $7 to $12 per sq ft

A standard concrete patio is the classic broom finish: poured concrete, troweled smooth, textured with a stiff broom while still plastic. Tone is the natural concrete grey. Joints are visible at proper spacing.

What you get at this tier:

  • 4-inch slab, 4,000 PSI mix
  • Crushed limestone base, 4 inches compacted
  • Rebar grid reinforcement
  • Standard broom or smooth troweled finish
  • Control joints at correct spacing
  • Drainage slope away from house

What you do not get: color, pattern, decorative treatment. The patio is functional and durable but does not draw the eye.

Best for: utility patios (grill area, AC pad expansion, dog run, storage area), patios under heavy covered structures where decorative work is hidden, budgets focused on usable square footage over appearance.

Tier 2: Decorative concrete patio — $12 to $22 per sq ft

Decorative concrete uses one or more of three techniques to elevate the appearance: color hardener, stamped texture, or acid stain. Pricing depends on which combination.

Stamped concrete (most common)

Texture mats pressed into plastic concrete create patterns mimicking stone, brick, slate, or wood. Combined with a color hardener (single tone) or two-tone antiquing (color hardener + release agent), the result is a high-end-looking surface at a fraction of natural-stone cost.

Typical pricing:

  • One-color stamped: $12-16 per sq ft
  • Two-color (antiqued) stamped: $14-18 per sq ft
  • Stamped with custom border: $15-20 per sq ft

Integral color (mixed in concrete)

Pigment mixed into the concrete itself produces a solid color throughout the slab. The result is more subtle than stamped — closer to "colored concrete" than "looks like stone." Pricing: $9-13 per sq ft.

Acid stain or water-based stain

Applied to cured concrete (not during pour), stains penetrate the surface and react chemically to create mottled, marble-like effects. Acid stains are the more dramatic option; water-based stains are more predictable but less natural-looking. Pricing: $3-6 per sq ft on top of standard concrete cost.

Tier 3: Premium custom patio — $18 to $30 per sq ft

Premium patios combine multiple techniques and add integrated features:

  • Multi-color stamped work (3+ colors, often with hand-staining of specific pattern elements)
  • Contrasting borders or accent bands
  • Integrated planters with built-up curbs
  • Built-in fire pits or grill stations (concrete portions only)
  • Multiple slab elevations (sunken patios, raised cooking platforms)
  • Outlet conduit and lighting raceways embedded in slab
  • Specialized finishes (polished concrete, exposed aggregate with sealer)

Premium patios typically run $18-30 per sq ft for the concrete work alone. A 400 sq ft premium patio lands in the $7,200-$12,000 range. Decorative elements (fire pit installations, custom metalwork, lighting fixtures) add to that on top of concrete cost.

What changes the price within a tier

  • Existing patio demolition: +$1.50-3.00 per sq ft
  • Significant elevation change or terracing: +20-40%
  • Tie-in to existing concrete (matching joint patterns): +$0.50-1.50 per sq ft
  • Custom border or accent band: +$1-2 per sq ft
  • Pre-pour conduit for lighting/outlets: +$200-600 flat
  • Larger pour requiring two truck loads: +$400-800 in delivery / minimum charge
  • Difficult access (no truck access, requires pump truck): +$400-1,200 for pump rental

What sealing costs

Standard broom finish patios: sealing optional. If you choose to seal, expect $1.50-3.00 per sq ft for two coats of acrylic sealer applied at day 28+.

Stamped or stained patios: sealing is mandatory and included in our quote. The sealer needs renewal every 2-3 years in Houston humidity — expect $1.50-3.00 per sq ft for re-sealing.

Which tier is right for you

  • Budget-focused: standard broom finish, get the most usable square footage for your dollar.
  • Want it to look custom: stamped concrete in a pattern that matches your home's exterior.
  • Plan to entertain regularly and want a "wow" outdoor space: premium tier, with integrated features.

Most Houston homeowners we work with pick the stamped tier — it produces 80% of the premium look at roughly 60% of the premium price, and the maintenance is the same as standard concrete (occasional reseal).
